QuestionHi. I'm Jade. I'm 15 and all my life I've had a passion for acting. The only problem is, my mom doesn't really support me that much. I don't have a lot of experience except for school plays. I really want to have headshots taken and find an agent or an acting school. But, all the places I look for on the Internet are scams. I would give anything to have my dream come true. I really want someone to help and support me and have faith in me. How do a I make things happen? How do I turn my passion from a dream to reality? Please help me.
Thank You
-Jade Graham
AnswerHi Jade,
I'm a big believer in following your passion. You're fortunate, in that you found it at a young age. First and foremost, continue to be involved in your school drama productions. That's good experience and practice. I'm sorry to hear that you don't have the full support from your Mom... but, she is probably just looking out for your best interests. It's important that you understand that an acting career is often unstable and difficult to get started. It takes skill and determination. The good news is you're young... and you have time to prepare and develop your craft. You can also study acting along side another profession/occupation quite easily... for example literature or language.
Continue to practice and perform while you are looking for opportunities. Are you studying dance? Voice? Any arts will add to your talent as an actress.
As far as agents or acting schools... it's hard for me to give you specific advice. You're right. Anything on the net that asks you for a lot of money is a scam. You must find someone in your local area to start with. If you want to discuss it further, feel free to write me back here and tell me where you are. Maybe I can help you find something.
Check your local phone book for "talent agents". Call them and ask them what they are looking for in talent your age. Perhaps you have some there that would be able to offer you advice. Do you have a local theater company?
I hope this helps.
All the best,
