Question
QUESTION: Dear Phil,
I have recently been told that due to my personality and London accent that I would be an easy fit for many roles within the Vancouver film business due to the fact that Vancouver is full of pretty boys and girls all wanting the same thing but not so full of mature character style guys like myself...........Please could you advise a 41year old dreamer on the first true steps to getting going.

I have been told if I produce a movie reel audition type reel and send it to the agents I will get a call for sure?

Whats your answer Phil?

ANSWER: Scott,

Thanks for writing. Just creating a demo reel is no guarantee that you will get work. You're a type, a specific type and if film and TV in Vancouver don't need that type in their project, you won't get work.

That said, a demo reel is a MUST for any legitimate actor. But it should show good, quality work. Don't go out and shoot scenes with another actor(s) just so you have work to put on your reel.

QUESTION: Firstly Phil thank for your brief yet prompt reply........Sincerley.
Just one more thing if possible.........Perhaps I was not so clear as to say I am not an actor and have no equity card ?whatever that is? and am looking to get into the film business as a newbie.....
I guess the question is

Whats the first step without being had by agents?

Answer
Scott,

What you need to be a working actor are the following:

1) talent
2) training
3) headshots
4) resume
5) demo reel
6) talent agent

If you're not yet an actor, you need training. I would enroll in some quality private acting classes to develop your talent. Then you need to invest in some headshots that show you best. Once you have the headshot, you need to do some theater, showcases, essentially an acting that you can add to a resume. Once you have enough good work on film and/or video, you'll be able to make a demo reel.

Finally, send your resume, headshot and demo reel (if you have one) to a few agents. Invite them to see you in something when you are appearing some work so they can see your talent in person. Then hope that they are willing to represent you.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Phil
