Question
I want to start a career in acting...but I have no idea how to start.  Do I need to go to school? Do I have a chance living outside of California?  What can I do to start promoting myself?  How do I know that I really have a chance?

Answer
Hi Kelly, You start where you are, getting all the acting experience you can.  Then if you are good at it as indicated by the kind of roles you get,  you take acting classes at a professional studio, you continue these two activities until you have a strong resume and then you try to get an agent.  You do not need to go to school full time, a carefully selected class now and then is sufficient. I think it is better not to be in CA. To promote yourself is a complex activity. I suggest you get a copy of Brian O'Neil's book, Acting as a Business.  Again, to really have a chance you need to show that you have ability by the roles you have played, and you need a strong resume.
