Question
Hi, my name is Ashley, I'm an aspiring actress and I live in Boston. I am so crazy & determined in starting a career as an actress that I've enrolled in acting classes at John Robert Powers. I even went out to a convention in L.A to perform in front of agents and casting directors. As you can imagine, it cost my parents an abundant amount of cash. The convention was no succuess but I cant complain because I love acting. And now JRP is offering me to be an elite student, which is unlimited classes for five years, but it costs another 4 thousand dollars. Im not sure if I should enroll because it sounds great but at the same time, where will I be in five years? I have heard that every actor needs professional training but then I've also heard that you shouldnt pay so much money for something that is guaranteed. I'm just so confused, because I reside in Boston where there are not as many opportunities. So please help me and give me any advice you have, Phil. I will be extremely appreciative.
Thanks.

Answer
Ashley,

Thanks for writing. I'm not a big fan of the JRP school of acting. I think they are a great program for a modeling career, but not an acting career.

If I were you, I wouldn't waste the $4000. Keep your money and find some QUALITY acting classes in the Boston area. Check with some of the local professional theater companies in the Boston area. There are a number of them. They may be able to lead you to some good acting teachers. You can also try contacting the Screen Actors Guild office in Boston for advice on acting teachers.

Finally, when you're of age, enroll in a college or university that has a BFA program in acting. That way you'll receive a college education, a college degree, AND the best training possible as an actor.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Phil
