Question
Like many young girls.
I'm a 16 year old girl who has no idea what i want to be when i get older, but after people have recommended me to take a dive in modeling, i began reading up on it. And now i would like to see if it's right for me.
I am very determined, and always thrive to do my best. In school, I am very good and math and arts. But i was always interested in arts instead. It realives me, and i spend hours on anything related to art to calm me. Memorizing monolouges, drawing, painting, etc.
I know modeling is different but i would like to try it.
Any advice please.
And i have no experience at all in modeling. I know no agency that surrounds me. If there's any information you can give me please do.
I live in Florida, Bonita springs.
I am Asian, 5'4", 115lbs.

thank you

Answer
You may want to consider acting as well as modeling, as you like memorization and monologues.

There is a talent agency in Ft Myers:
Burton & Robinson Agency
10051 MCGREGOR BLVD. #108 FORT MYERS, 33919
239-645-6870
http://burtonrobinsonagency.com

And also many agencies for both modeling and acting in the Ft Lauderdale/Miami area if you're able to make the commute.  That's something to consider if you have the support of a parent or friend who is willing to drive you - and if you can carpool with a group of friends who are also interested in modeling (and acting) the commute costs (gas, parking, tolls) can be divided when you go on auditions or go-sees.

There are modeling and talent agency directories available in your local library, bookstore or online - and there may be other agencies closer to you.  First thing is to figure out if there are, and which agencies you can get to.  You would then need to submit your information to them.  You may be asked for a modeling composite card, (for commercial print modeling agents) or an actor's headshot & resume (for talent agents/various type of acting).

Often an agency will have a website that details what they are looking for from new faces, so you can make a plan, include the agencies you are interested in, and gather together what materials you may need.

Once you are represented, your agent submits you for work.  When you book a job, the agency takes a commission (usually 10-20%) off of the money you earn through them.  Stay away from "agents" who try and sell you photography services, marketing services, classes, printing and the like.  A licensed agency in Florida should only be taking a commission off of booked work, and no schooling or classes are required or necessary for modeling.

There is more information specifically for Florida on the Florida-Models.com website in the Modeling Scams section, should you wish to do more research about that.

Good luck to you,

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
