Question
I would like to start modeling. I'm not really sure about how to start, do you think you could help me get started. And maybe, let me know what I'm getting myself into. It'd be really appreciated. Thank You.

Answer
The first thing would be for you to figure out what kind of modeling you want to do, and are appropriate for.  Then I suggest looking for an agent in your area.

Once you are signed with an agency, their job is to find you work.  An agency earns money by taking a percentage (usually 10-20%) off of the money you earn through them.

You may need a modeling composite card to submit to agencies for their consideration - but check first with the agencies you are interested in, and each agency may have different requirements, and different criteria for what they are looking for.

You can use one of the modeling agency directories (available in your local library, bookstore or online, and on newsstands in larger markets like NYC and Los Angeles.)  Some of the agency directories give website addresses for agencies, some do not.  Many agencies do have a website, so you can use your favorite search engine to see if they do.  Quite often the agency's website has agency criteria and submission instructions for new faces.

Generally speaking, many types of modeling can be done in the area around your agency.  Fashion modeling, however, usually involves travel and/or living in countries other than where your home agency is. If you're interested in fashion, you may want to also apply for or make sure your current passport is up-to-date.

If you're under 18 (or the age of majority in your area), you'll need a parent or legal guardian to sign contracts, and they can also check to see what the laws are in your area regarding model/talent agencies, and if you need a work permit.

Of course if you are an adult, you can do that on your own, and don't need an (underage) work permit.

Good luck to you,
~Kitty

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
