Question
Hello,
I'm Lauren. And I'm only 13, but I'm wondering about this business and i think it would be best to start early. I'm trying to talk my parents into getting me into acting classes or get an acting coach, and to get an agent. But I'm not exactly sure How to Get an agent. Also I was wondering if you have any suggestions about getting into commercials. Please Help Me! :)
Thanks,
Lauren!

Answer
Acting classes are a wonderful idea - even if you can manage only something basic such as an auditioning class.  Ideally, a class that teaches acting for commercials might be most helpful, and you list training on your actor's resume, so it's a plus to have more, rather than less to put on it.

You can use the list of franchised agents on the Screen Actor's Guild website (assuming you're located in the US).  The list is organized by location in the US, and many of the agencies also have a modeling division as well.

The list is on www.sag.org, in the Member Services main section, Find an Agent is on the right.  You can use your favorite search engine to see if the agencies you are interested in have a website.  Many do, and they usually have their agency criteria and submission process on their website as well.

It does make it easier when an agency has a website, as you can usually read something about the agency and more easily determine if they represent models/talent of your age, and what type of acting they specialize in.

There are agencies that handle only work in commercials, and you can certainly tell your agent you're not interested in being considered for live theater or stage work, if your interest is in commercials, television or film.

Good luck to you,
~Kitty

Expertise

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
