Questionhey Im janessa, and would like to ask about modeling.
Im 17 years old and mixed with Filipino-Chinese blood. I would like to ask about the requirements for modeling. I planned to go to Japan after I graduate from College to pursue my career. I want to be a model in the fashion magazines or any magazines or in the commercial maybe. But I just dont know where to start. I also planned to take acting afterwards if I succeed my career as being a model.
Could you please give me an advise what I should do first. I'm 5''5 tall, I dont know if Im qualified. and being a MODEL in magazines or in the commercial, do we have to take the MODELING COURSE in College? or we can just get an agent and apply?
Just so let you know, Im going to take Music in College but would like to be a model. Is it possible to be a model without a modeling diploma? or we had to have it?
hope you can answer all my questions and thanks alot!
regards
AnswerFor fashion modeling (if you're in the US now) you don't meet the minimum height requirement. Japan has less of a restriction on height requirements than the US does - so you may grow tall enough to meet those, which start at around 5'7.
However, for commercial print modeling in most parts of the US there is no height requirement, so you could certainly consider doing that now.
For acting (in films, commercials or television, or theater) there is no height requirement anywhere.
For modeling, other than promotional modeling, models do not use resumes, and there is no training or schooling required or necessary to begin. It is recommended that actors do have some training, even if it's only in auditioning or the basics in the type of acting you are interested in doing.
Models and actors both generally use agents - as most of the big jobs or professional clients do not hire freelance models or actors. You can use one of the model/talent agency directories available in your local library, bookstore, online or on newsstands in larger markets such as NYC or Los Angeles to find the agents closest to you.
There are also a few modeling/talent agency directories that cover international agencies as well.
It is likely that you will need either a modeling composite card and/or professional actor's headshot/resume to submit to agencies for their consideration. Each area is different, and there are differences among agencies as to what the standard is in each area, so do a bit of research in your area before you invest in getting your materials together to submit.
But to clarify, for commercial print modeling and acting, your height is not an issue. No schooling or diploma is required, you can and should get an agent. The rules and regulations that cover the modeling and talent industry vary from place to place, and different agencies can have different criteria, so check the area where you plan to work for any laws or the local (agency) criteria. Many agencies are also willing to offer a sample of what they feel they can best use as far as headshots and/or modeling composite cards, and some agencies keep lists of area photographers for you to look into.
Good luck to you,
