Question
Greetings!
How does one go about becoming a camera operator, like working one of the reality shows, and general motion picture work.  Is this the same thing as being a cinematographer.  Where do I start to build a career in this business?  Thank you in advance for your time on this.  I hope my question makes sense....

David

Answer
David,

Thanks for writing. If you'd like to eventually work as a cinematographer, you need to begin by learning about the camera equipment and the art of lighting. I would enroll in some courses that will teach you all about the current host of camera equipment used in film and TV. Get to know BOTH videotape/digital and film worlds as the mediums use different types of equipment. I would also enroll in a course that will teach you the art of lighting for a film and television set.

Once you've got a a good sense of equipment and lighting, then begin looking for work as a camera department P.A. or intern on a production. Even if it doesn't pay! Work for free on a couple of shows to show those you work with how good you are and that you're willing to do what it takes to have a career in cinematography. Build as many relationships as you can with 1st Assistant Cameramen as they are the individuals who hire the Cinematographer's (or D.P.'s)  crew.

From your first job as a camera P.A. to your first paying gig as a cinematographer usually will take you about 15-20 years. That's the truth! It can happen faster in TV, say in 10-15 years, but don't expect to be a cinematographer overnight. It takes time, experience, talent and luck!

Hope this helps. Good luck!
