QuestionHi Laura!
I read some of your past answers and they are very helpful! Thanks!
I am currently an undergrad at UCLA (not acting major, unfortunately).
I had just turned 21, I will be graduating next year. I am average looking Chinese American with fluent Chinese.
My question would be:
1. I have no experinces whatsoever except some acting classes (theory, basic) at UCLA. Where/what class do you recommand in the LA area?
2. I have noticed the shortage of actor/tress of asian american descent especially in the film industry(better in TV), do you agree with the disadvantage for aspiriing asian actors?
3. Where/how do i start building my resume, while in school? taking small parts? audition? seek agents? What would be the best order that you recommand?
AnswerHi Alex
You're welcome... and glad you came back with your questions! First and foremost you should take a beginning acting class to see how you feel performing... and if you even like it! There are a lot of great classes, one great coach comes to mind. His name is Sal Romeo... and he teaches in Los Feliz. Look him up... if he's still teaching, I highly recommend you go see him. Also check out Larry Moss' theater: The Edgemar Center for the Arts in Santa Monica... they have great programs.
I am by no means a casting expert... but, I'm afraid that the business is not short on Asian actors... but short on Asian parts. I know that all the networks/producers are making an attempt to write more for minorities... hopefully, it will keep improving. That said, there is always room for talent, so don't let that stop you.
Start building your resume any way you can! Whatever you can do while staying in school is valuable. Check out Backstage West weekly and Craig's List and begin to get familiar with the types of projects out there. Check out the UCLA film/drama programs and see how to get involved in their student films. If you feel you're ready to audition, go for it! You need to get some experience and develop yourself as an artist before you seek out an agent. But, if you're unsure, take a class first. You don't want to get out there unprepared. You won't get a second chance. Wait until you are sure of what you have to offer... and what you want in your career. Then, hopefully, they'll come after you!
Hope this helps.
Feel free to contact me if you have any more specific questions.
I wish you all the best!
