QuestionDear Laura,
I am hopeful after the recent answer you gave Julian regarding beginning an acting career over 40. I have always had an interest in pursuing an acting but it was against my parent's wishes while I was in younger and in school. Now years later, I still have the desire, but lack the experience. The only education/classes that I have were from 8 years ago I had auditioned at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC, and was accepted into their evening program. Due to poor timing, I only completed 1 of the 2 years. I did take an Acting for Commercial class at Weist-Barron 1 year ago, and got good feedback, but never had my head shots taken. I would really like to pursue this this, but would like some advice on what would be the best route to take...acting classes for theatre vs. film or both, community theatre, independent films. etc.. I live in NYC and there are so many schools and classes to choose from. I've looked through Backstage and it can be so overwhelming...I would appreciate your advice. I, have also been told that I would be marketable for print/commercial modeling...not for fashion (as I am only 5' 3 1/2"). Would you pursue both simultaneously or is it best to focus on just one. My desire would be the acting, but would the other be helpful to have as experience.
Thank you,
Geralyn
AnswerHi Geralyn
Ok... well, the good news is that you're in NYC... the city is full of opportunities. There's no doubt that you are at a disadvantage, as most women your age that are pursuing acting have years of experience. However, that just means that you have to work harder. If you're really going to pursue it... if it is truly your passion... then, I say go for it! But, know that you must give it everything you've got. It will not come to you... you must go after it.
Why didn't you carry through with headshots and classes last time? It seems to me you need a specific plan. You are asking whether you should take classes for theater or film or both? What do you want to do? Where do you see yourself performing? Where does your talent lie? If you don't know... then, take both and figure it out. You need to know what type of work you want to do.
Unfortunately, your height really knocks you out of print/commercial modeling per se. You may find some work that way... but, it will come through a commercial agent, not print. Pursue the acting. Get into classes... get to know other actors who are doing what you want to do... research theater companies and volunteer to help them... look at non-union/student films and try to get an audition.... Any way that you can get active, perform, learn and network. You've got to get out there.
If I remember correctly Julian had a flexible job with solid income. This will absolutely be necessary for you... if you pursue this with an economic struggle, it will be all the more difficult. I
Also one last note, and I hate to say this... but, the industry is much kinder to men over 40 than women. That's a fact. It's extremely important that if you are going to start now... know exactly what you want... and don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it. (because they will, believe me) Figure out what you want exactly, how you're going to get it... and make a deadline for yourself. That way, you'll know if it suits you... you'll be able to say you did everything you could... and that's all we can really do, isn't it?
I spent 9 years of my career as an actor in ny. If you want more specific information and guidance, feel free to contact me privately.
I wish you all the best!
Sincerely
