Question
Hi...ever since I was young and did my first play I wanted to be an actress..I've gone to college and majored in mass comm radio n tv. Now that all that is over I want to pursue my dreams but I feel I dontknow where to start. Shud I take lessons, or jus go to as many open auditions as possible? I'm 23 n I jus don't want to wait any longer...I joined talent managements..I used backstage newspaper..but I don't get any responses n I feel its due to my lack of resume..but how do I get started if no one will give me a chance to show my talent? Thanks for your time....Camille
AnswerHi Camille
Good for you coming by here to ask! It's good news that you have a degree in mass communications... that's a great degree to fall back on if you need it. (I studied journalism in school) I didn't start acting until I was 25... so, don't despair. (I've been working professionally ever since) The goal for you now should be to study, study, study... and get as MUCH experience that you can. You're right, you are going to be competing with actors who have a resume... so, you need to start building yours. Are you in a big city? Get involved with the local theater company. Networking will be valuable to you... get to know the local actors and what they are doing. It's really important that you don't stress yourself financially... so, make sure you have a job with flexible hours. Keep up that confidence you have... and get into class. Open auditions are usually a waste of time unless you know something about the people involved or have read the script and it is good. Most of the time, they are looking to hook you into classes or services that will cost you money. Don't pay ANYONE to represent you... or for classes that promise jobs. If you're good, you're good and will make money... not give money away! If you are in NY or LA I can help you further with specific classes... etc... Let me know.
Feel free to contact me again with any questions.
All the best to you.
Pursue your dreams.... and don't take no for an answer.
