QuestionI have no experience in directing or the film industry whatsoever but for as long as I can remember I have wanted to be part of it. I watch countless films and am a constant nuisance to anyone watching them with me because I will be picking up on the cinematography, looking where the camera is, analyzing the performances etc. I have a real passion for the industry and dream of being part of it but the idea is so very daunting and having no idea where to start I am lost for a first move. I have recently started reading scripts whilst watching films to try and understand how they bring it to life and have also bought a highly recommended book on cinematography by Blain Brown. I have also been looking at film schools but many require previous experience and examples of work, how do I get to this stage? Do I just buy a camera and making shorts? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
AnswerHi Sean, sorry, for the delay,I seem to remember answering this, but, perhaps it did not get sent to you somehow. Cinematography is only a small part of filmmaking and directors often leave most of those decisions to the cinematographer. You do not say how old you are or what your student status is. A good background for a filmmaker would be to work in the theatre to understand how stories are told dramatically. Then get a digital camcorder and write and film short stories. Also look in Craig's List for independent film auditions and go and volunteer to help make the film. That is how you get experience. Read more about filmmaking, don't just stick with cinematography. Best wishes and God bless, Doc
