Question
QUESTION: I've been in college for a few years now. I'm currently pursuing a degree in technical theatre. I've found that Stage Management is something I enjoy very much, but I've also come to realize that eventually, I would like to try my hand in film. The only problem is, I'm not sure what aspect.

I've been thinking about art direction, but I'm not really sure what it concerns. I guess my question is, what exactly does an art director on a film do? What are their responsibilities concerning pre-production, production and post-production. Do they spend much time on-set?

Thanks. :)

Becca

ANSWER: Becca,

Thanks for writing. If you're interested in finding something that would be equivalent to that of a stage manager in the theater, you should be looking at the position of a 1st Assistant Director. An Art Director is responsible for the physical design and look of the sets and locations. While he can be on the set, he is usually on a set where they are not shooting, preparing the set in advance of the shooting crew's arrival. Art Directors prepare the sets and locations during pre-production and production, but they do no work during post-production.

Hope this helps.

QUESTION: This helps very much, sir. I wonder if you have any other suggestions as to other possibilities someone in my position might be interested in.

I know this is a hard question, because you don't really know me. But any suggestion helps.

Thanks. :)

Answer
Becca,

There isn't much more I can offer other than suggesting that if you truly wish for a career as an art director, then consider enrolling a college that has a strong set design program for the professional theater, one that offers a BFA degree in set design. This will give you excellent training that will prepare you for a career as an art director in film and TV.

Good luck!
