Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing - acting classes

Expert: Kenneth D. Plonkey - 10/26/2009

Question
In my search for acting classes in the DC metro area, I have found many expensive classes ($200+)that focuses on individual aspects of acting. Of couse it seems as if i'll need all of them, but I could never afford that. What types of classes should I consentrate on in order to get the most out of my money?

Answer
Hi Tracy, IF you have the necessary natural talent to act, you do not need all of the classes, if fact, I would wager that you don't need any of them yet. It is a mistake of begriming actors to assume that classes will make them "more talented" when in fact talent cannot be taught. Classes teach an actor things that they can use when they act. But the very first thing someone should do is to become an actor, which is to say then need to be in a lot of plays, a lot of plays, as many as they can be in, then when they have gotten roles in plays that indicate they might indeed have the necessary talent to be a professional actor they can choose a class or two that will give them more things they can use, such as film acting or how to audition  The important thing is not to get in a hurry as that gets aspiring actors scammed. I invite you to read my blog at http://theatredoconacting.blogspot.com and learn more by reading all the posts on acting.  God bless, Doc
