Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/where to go for film school

QuestionHello Mr.Plonkey,
Im an aspireing cinematographer/actor/model. i have an extensive modeling portfolio but almost no work for my other two professions. now, ive been looking into film schools here in boston and the only real place to go around here would be either Emerson (which i dont have the grades or money for), or Mass art institute (which i dont feel secure with). i origionally wanted to go off to LA to try to get a start off of film school, and what i have from modeling to get into acting in films along with a career being a videographer. i would obviously take a small acting class to refine what i already know but i have friends who are actors and they tell me im a "natural amatuer". the real question is where should i go for film school? ive looked in to dozen upon dozens of schools and i seem to be stuck between either MAI or new york film academy either in NY (which is relatively close to where i live) or out in universal studios in CA. please, if theres someplace ive missed, or that is better please let me know. Also, i know that NYFA sounds good, but are they a scam and if not, are they worth the price? i was looking at their 2 year course but i cant go to a 2 year school that ill just end up abondoned on santa monica begging for change for a bus ride back to MA.
thanks in advance,
Phil
AnswerHi Phil, The Northeast is a difficult area to break into film. I certainly would not advise going to LA without a secure way to earn a living. You have a lot of goals. Wanting to be a film maker and actor and model is a bit scattered. I wonder what a "natural amateur" is. Someone who naturally will be an amateur perhaps? Universal Studios in CA is an amusement park, NYFA is a place which is only interested in getting your money. If you have "an extensive modeling portfolio" why don't you have an agent that will represent you for both modeling and film? I really don't quite know where to point you. Vancouver Film School has a one year program you might look into, but it is a huge move as well. You don't tell me your age or previous acting experience, such as high school plays. So what I recommend is this: read my blog, all of it, at
http://theatredoconacting.blogspot.com and then write to me at kencosp@aol.com and give me more facts about you and your background and goals along with all the questions you may have about he posts at my blog. God bless, Doc
