Question
Hi Kitty,
I am 19 and also in a wheelchair, and am a quadriplegic. I live in Milpitas, CA. I've been told a lot that I am beautiful and almost isn't convincing that I'm in a wheel chair. I really would like to try out modeling but don't really know exactly know where to start, maybe you can help.

Answer
You can use one of the agency directories to locate the modeling agents closest to you, and then send them your info for consideration.  There are a few agencies in California that have disabled divisions or are known to be disabled friendly.  A good resource for you to learn what's currently happening in the industry is the Media Access Office.  Their main office is in Los Angeles, but there is another office in Concord listed as well: http://www.disabilityemployment.org/med_acc.htm

Their focus is more on acting than on modeling, but they do cover all areas of the industry.  I have gotten modeling work through them, have taken (free) classes in acting and screenwriting, and attended casting/auditioning showcases through them as well.  They are really supportive to talent with all types of disabilities, and they understand the unique challenges each of us face in the industry.

Good luck to you,
~Kitty

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
