Question
Hi, I live in NYC and have a 10 month old nephew who is extremely photogenic. Everyone says he looks like a "Gerber baby" and I want to make that happen for real! I know the potential scams and how to avoid them but what I don't know is where to start looking for a reputable agency. Where can I find a good agency here? I need all the advice you can give me! Thanks...

Answer
You can start with the Ross Reports, available on newsstands in NYC, bookstores, libraries or online: www.rossreports.com

They do have agencies that represent babies and very young children, and you may only need a couple snapshots of your nephew because of his age to submit to agents and for him to work (as opposed to a modeling composite card, portfolio or professional headshot.)

Hopefully you won't run into scams through using the Ross Reports, and I haven't yet heard of that happening - just keep aware and trust your instincts.  Because of your nephew's age, it might be easier to recognize anything untoward happening.  Of course if an agency seems to be making their money in a way other than getting work for models/talent they represent, it might be better to look for representation elsewhere.

An agent should earn their money by taking a percentage off of the money models/talent earn through them (usually 10-20%).  If they suggest acting or modeling classes, or want your nephew to shoot an entire portfolio with "their" photographer, or have you print up hundreds of modeling composite cards (through them) - that might be a sign that they are not legit.

And just for fun, check with the Gerber company: www.gerber.com

You never know when they might hold a public contest for the next Gerber baby face.

:)
Good luck to you and your nephew,

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
