Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/Beginning an Acting career
Expert: Kenneth D. Plonkey - 3/2/2009
QuestionHi, I am 17 years old and am ending my high school career. I am on the
whole career decision stage and i was originally planning to go into business
and fashion design, but I have always had a secret love for acting and
entertaining, and I would like to try it out now before its too late. The only
real experience I have had in acting was an interpretive play I played the lead
role in for my church. Although there were no real lines involved, it was pretty
challenging because there was a lot of pretending involved. I know it sounds
cliche but I would love to star in and work for Disney Channel. Now, I know
you do not know me, but I would like to get a professionals view on my
situation and what my chances of accomplishing my goal are. Thank you so
much for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.
AnswerDear Andrea, It is a shame you did not participate in high school theatre. The church play is an ok item for your resume, but at 17 there is literally no chance for you to be on Disney unless you look much younger. Unfortunately, you have no real experience nor training and it takes years to get those. You letter is almost identical to hundreds that I get from students aged 11 to 18 every week on this and other forums. It is unlikely that any of them will ever be in anything let alone a Disney production. Acting is the most overcrowded, most difficult profession one can choose.
