Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/Confidence Issues...i think?

QuestionHello Wanda I am currently in highschool right now. I wanted to get a better understanding of this certain part of myself. I can't seem to figure it out and it's starting to drive me crazy.
I am aiming to be an actress someday, in film/television that is. I want to start out small and work my way up. Nothing to bizarre or dramatic a first, just something to get in the business you know?
i have a plan to attend a college after highschool and go into a tourism course(so i can have a backup if all things fall through)and after i get my degree/certificate, i was going to go into a performing arts course. So i can get some training.
However currently right now.; Every year i go into drama class i think I'm going to be better then last year, i say that every year and then some sort of insecure feeling comes back at me. I keep trying to fight it, but i can't think of a way to get rid of it. I mean I'm not stage shy, just I'm always afraid of what people will think of me, when I'm acting as a certain character. I know people know for who i am but my mind can't seem to get around it subconsciously.
I've talked to my drama teacher about the play next year and am going into vocal lessons this summer, once i save up the rest of the money i need. I have a plan and sometimes i feel like i can't reach it, but i always think i can do it. It's going to be tough and i can't give up. As much as i want to sometimes, i know deep down that's only an excuse my mind is telling me because it can't be patient and wait.
any ideas?
thanks,
Aspiring Actress
AnswerHi there...and thanks for writing.
It is really important that you ask this question now. So good for you. The good news is that it is going to change for you - this fear - but it will take time. It will take work. It will take tenacity.
The way to help yourself through this is to answer some questions in the midst of the fear. Ask yourself is this a character or person that I would like to be affiliated with? If so then you do not need to be concerned. If not then do not take the part.
Also ask yourself what it is you are afraid of and if it is something you can control. If you cannot control it then drop it. It is not your issue. If you can do something about it then do so - take action.
There is a saying that courage is moving ahead even if there are obstacles. So be courageous and do whatever training and get as much experience as you can. And do your best.
Most importantly - Breathe deeply. When we are afraid we forget to breathe. If you find yourself getting more and more nervous breathe deeply and it will help.
And learn from each experience.
Does this help you?
