Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/Best day jobs for actors?

QuestionHello!
I'm a musical theater major in college right now, and I definitely want to pursue theater as a career. I know almost all actors need a side/day job to supplement the typical theater income, and a lot end up working in in things like waitressing and web design.
My question is, do you know of any flexible, good side/day jobs that require a college degree? I just feel like since I'm already spending all this time and money in college, I'd love to consider double majoring or studying a field or profession that would start you off at more than minimum wage. (Especially considering the college loans I'm accumulating).
Does anything come to mind, or am I only wistfully thinking?
Thank you very much for your time!
AnswerHello Sarah. Well, first of all, I am sorry to say that you are in a situation that is not good for becoming a professional actress. Yes, it is possible to get a full time job that pays well while trying to break in to acting. I cannot recommend any particular jobs, but anything at which you kind of set your own pace is good. Then you have to have an employer who is empathetic to your goals. AS far as double majoring to reach that goal is concerned, I have not heard of a good music theatre major that allow a student to double major. Yours could be an exception,of course. What you definitely do not want to do is to add any time or money to your education. Student loans are a sure way to keep you from succeeding as an actress because of the pressure to pay them back. Finally, in all by a very very few instances, academics and acting do not mix. Your musical theatre major may or may not be the best way you could have proceeded. That aside, you have selected the smallest, most difficult of all the areas of the most difficult profession in the world. That's ok if you are a show-stopping talent.
