Question
Modeling was my only true desire, I never got the opportunity to accomplish, now at age 36 still tall and beautiful. What can I do to get started? I would like to know if some could inquire from Tyra if she would consider doing a season or two for an American Next Top Model for women age 35 to 40 years old. With one exception that I will be chosen.

Thanks,
Gillian

Answer
It's great that you are going after your dream!  It's never too late.

You could certainly inquire with Tyra - you never know what interesting direction she may want to take the show.

Generally speaking, older fashion models are not new faces, but usually models with experience who are moved into the sophisticated division of fashion modeling agencies as they age.

You could also consider commercial print modeling, which has no age limit.  It's not quite the same thing, but one can start at any age without previous experience.  It's usually modeling products and services other than fashion or beauty - but it's modeling, and commercial print agencies don't usually have the same criteria for height, age and size that fashion agencies do.

There are modeling agency directories available in print and online for both fashion and commercial print modeling agencies, although they tend to be more comprehensive for the US market rather than worldwide.

If you're in or near one of the larger markets (NYC, LA or Miami, for example) then there should be quite a few agencies who might be right for you.

Good luck to you,

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
