Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/Post-University Acting Career

Question
I am a BA Theatre student at Florida State University, planning on doubling in creative writing. I wanted to audition for the BFA Acting program here, but I have started thinking about saving conservatory or conservatory-like training for a graduate degree. I am a passionate stage actress of 4 years, and I want to hone my skills in the best way possible.

Would it be more helpful for me as an actress to introduce myself to an intense BFA program and again in graduate school, or to claim a BA first and then go on to a MFA program?

One more thing; what do you consider the best post-university cities to begin a theatre career? I don't want to go to NYC or Los Angeles, or even Chicago, to start off with. I've lived in the DC region and am somewhat familiar with the theatre scene there as well. I would like to start somewhere where I can start becoming recognized regionally, and hopefully hold onto a steady job on the side as well.

Thank you!

Answer
Hello Lisette, Usually BFA acting students are not allowed to double major due to the rigorous curriculum.  To finish a BA and then do a BFA is not wise, because you would have to repeat so much.  I don't really think BFA and conservatory training are worth it. IF it were, all the graduates would be professional actors and they are not. MFA'a are mostly teaching degrees. I agree with not going to NYC< LA or Chicago.  Or DC.  Theatre acting is a pretty narrow career goal. There are more film and tv jobs than stage jobs. IT is a very very difficult career. You will need a day job that allows you the flexibility to go to auditions and rehearsals during the day.  Write me at kencosp@aol.com and tell me what roles in what plays you have done and I will send you my book on preparing for a career as an actress. God bless, Doc
