Question
I'm really interested in modeling and have been for like four years. I don't have a job at the moment and i just graduated. What would be your best advice to someone like me who is serious about modeling, but doesn't know exactly where to start or what to even go about doing.

Answer
I suggest seeking out agency representation.  There are few models who are able to work professionally without an agent - and most of the work goes through an agency.  Depending on what type of modeling you are interested in and appropriate for, you would submit your information to an agency who represents the type of modeling you want to do.

There are quite a few modeling agency directories available in your local library, bookstore, newsstands (in larger markets) and online.  A couple of the online (free) lists I like are for fashion: http://models.com/agencies/top/
and for commercial print: http://www.sag.org/content/find-agent

You can use your favorite search engine to look up the websites (if available) of any of the agencies you are interested in.  Most do have websites which detail agency criteria for new faces and the submission process.

There are also directories available for other types of modeling (such as children's, plus-size, glamour/adult, fitness, etc.) for both the US and worldwide.  Quite a few of the fashion agencies have multiple locations outside of NYC as well.

The fashion agencies usually only want to see a couple snapshots for consideration, while other types of agencies may ask for a modeling composite card, or may also consider snapshots from new faces.  You can make a list of the agencies you are interested in, find out what their submission process is, and submit your info to them.  Some agencies have open calls, some take mailed in submissions and/or emailed submissions.

Once you are represented by an agency they will look for work for you.  For modeling work you get through them, they take a percentage off of the money you earn - usually around 10-20%.

Good luck to you, and congratulations on your recent graduation.

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
