Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/I want to get back into acting
Expert: Kenneth D. Plonkey - 9/20/2009
QuestionDear Dr. Kenneth D. Plonkey,
I have always loved the performing arts. While I was growing up I was immersed in many forms of artistic expression including playing piano, singing, visual arts, dance, and acting. In high school I had some self-esteem issues and was told that it would be impossible to make it in the entertainment industry. I was also shy and didn't have the confidence to fully pursue acting. So I have not been practicing for a few years now.
I am now 22 years old and attending University. I am soon graduating with a B.A. degree in Psychology. Unfortunately psychology really isn't my passion and I have no idea what to do next.
I would like to at least get back into the performing arts as a hobby if not as a career. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I think that an intro acting course could be beneficial because I have been out of practice for a while.
Do you recommend any good acting schools/programs in Toronto? Do you know of any good acting agencies in Toronto? Also, I would love to read your book "The Tao of Acting, Mentoring for the Aspiring Actor." How can I access a copy online?
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thank you,
Michele Rose
AnswerHi Michele. Acting is not a good way to try to earn a living. Very very few professional actors earn a living by acting. There just is not enough work. But if you are talented enough and have the proper information, you may be able to do some professional acting. I have heard that Carter Thor East is a good acting school in Toronto. And I have heard the Fulcher Agency is good, but it is not a matter of just picking an agency. Getting an agent is a very difficult task. If you write to me at kencosp@aol.com, I will attach an ecopy of my book to my reply. God bless, Doc
