Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/Questions Within Questions
Expert: Kenneth D. Plonkey - 5/20/2010
QuestionDear, Mr. Plonkey:
I am 18 years old and have just finished a year of junior college; As of now, I only have two theatre classes under my belt, and I have done three plays alongside another that I was pre-cast for--one that I have yet to perform. I wish to pursue acting, moving from threatre to television/film (I'd prefer to do TV/film work). I have a couple of questions regarding acting about which I'd like your opinion.
1. Do you have any suggestions about what kind of colleges I should consider if I'm interested in acting for film, or do most college courses pertain to theatrics? Are there good arts schools with programs that focus strongly on Theatre and English?
2. Do you believe my ethnicity (I am predominantly three races) will play a roll in my acceptance or rejection from a bigger college?
3. I am quite inexperienced, as you can tell from my aforementioned "resume"; how can I delve further into acting while I'm still in school? What is your take on hiring a talent agent? What about creating an acting resume for audition purposes (I obviously have no idea how to go about that)?
Thank you so much for your time and thoughts. I truly appreciate it, and I apologize for the lengthy message ( tend to ramble). :)
AnswerHello Britney, The plays you have done are very important. Moving from stage to camera acting is very easy. 1. there are few colleges that focus on film acting. Theatre majors are different from Acting majors. I will need to know more about your background before I can recommend a college. 2. Ethnicity has nothing to do with your success as an actor. If you have the talent and personality and knowledge of the business, you have as good a chance as any other actress of succeeding. 3. It is difficult to do more than school when at school. Be in all the plays you can. Study English well.. One does not hire a talent agent. Talent agents select with whom they work and you have to apply to them.. I will teach you how to make a resume. I want you to go to my web site www.kenplonkeyacting.com and read my free ebook and my blog all the way back to its begriming. Write to me at my email address which is on the home page and ask me lots of questions. God bless, Doc
