Question
Recently, I've found that my sense of humor really catches the attention of people and that I'm funnier than I thought I was; past classmates and professors have told me so. I have the material in my head and I know of stories to tell and how to tell them just right to get people in stitches, but I really have no clue on how to begin with stand-up. I have taken drama classes in high school, and I talk with the drama department at my campus quite regularly and have been in production on campus as well, mainly comedic roles that people love.

So any tips on getting started are greatly appreciated.

Answer
This is an easy question. Stand-up comedy is an odd art forms that unlike being a musician or an actor, you don't need take lessons or get a teacher. To start stand-up, you just get up and do it.

So, go to your local comedy club, and watch the shows. Find out about their "open mic night," and how to sign up. Then, just sign up and do it.

You can also start your own "open mic" at a local coffee house, cafe, or bookstore. That's how I did it. You'd be surprised how easy getting started is. Being funny, on the other hand, may take awhile.

Be brave. Never steal a joke or an idea. Never go over your time. (If the club gives you five minutes, make sure you're done in FIVE minutes not six.)

Stand-up comedy is one of the scariest and greatest things in life. Don't miss out. Get out there are do it. Best of luck to you.
