Question
QUESTION: Dear Mr Nemy,

I am a 30 year old UK male who has over the past 12 years been living out a dream to work in the Construction Industry. I then followed another ambition to take my career and work abroad in the Middle East - something that I will never regret as I have gained invaluable experience and has made me the person I am today.

Over the past two years I have had a burning desire to fulfil my ultimate goal of working within the film industry in Production. I would never have considered trying to pursue this course 10 years ago due to a certain number of factors - the self belief, the confidence, the talent and my maturity.

However, I now know that my future lies in trying to forge out a career within the film industry and then helping out others who like me want a career change in film. Being older and seeing the world, and different cultures has taught me about making the most of what I have and striving to achieve the best I can, with the time given.

The stumbling block I am finding is that Film Studios and Production Companies do not appear to cater for the career change minded person. We now live in a world where various and life changing opportunities cross our paths daily, yet it is down to the person to grab them with both hands.

I am not afraid of hard work, a drop in wage or no wage (fortunately I am single), a demanding yet rewarding job, networking with seasoned and talented professionals, lack of sleep, working as part of a team, re-location and starting at the bottom.

What do you think is the best way for someone like me who is not afraid of the kicks and punches of the film industry to at least give myself the best chance to have a shot at getting employment and succeeding within Production?

Your advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Lee

QUESTION: Dear Mr Nemy,

Thank you for getting back to me. I am looking at a career change into being a producer. I know I would have to start at the bottom to work my way up, but the role of a producer would be very fulfilling. The thought of taking another persons imagination and ideas and then turning into something visual excites me!

I know given an opportunity I could really do well within a team to achieve something but also personally, but the question is how does someone like me, coming from a construction background get an opportunity like this when studios and production companies look at experience over determine, drive and a small element of risk on that person?

Thank you for any advice you can give me.

Kindest regards

Lee Stafford

Answer
Lee,

If you want to be a producer and be taken seriously, you need to bring money to the table. No studio will give you the time of day as you have absolutely no experience in film. So the way you get their attention is by partnering with someone who DOES have experience. He/She brings a script, connections, and experience to the table, while you bring the money. That's how most unknown, inexperienced producers get started in the film business.
