Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/Where to start...
Expert: Kenneth D. Plonkey - 3/26/2011
QuestionHello Dr. Plonkey,
I've become very interested in acting and would like to try out a class or two to see if it may peek my interest. But I don't know where to start. I'm in my 30's and feel I may be too old. Also I see that classes require a fee for a period of a few weeks or so and for now I'm only interested in trying it out. Do you know of any places in the San Jose area that may have classes for people who are interested in taking a peek at what may be an opportunity for oneself?
Sincerely,
Michael
AnswerHello Michael, Well, you are not alone. Many people your age also would like to try acting. You are never too old, many well known film actors did not start until they were fifty. I was forty when I started acting professionally. The best way to try it out without spending any money, is to audition for a community theatre play. Do some research and find a couple of community theatres near you and call them and ask when they are having auditions next and what do you do to take part. Some large acting studios allow prospective students to sit in on a class, but I believe the most effective way to start is to tryout for community theatre plays. That way you get an idea of your ability before you put any money into it. Community theatres do not require experience and teach you all you need to know to participate and usually for free. Best wishes, and God bless, Doc
