Question
I've been producing/directing at a private high school for 3 straight plays and 7 musicals over the past 8 years.  How best do I transition into for-profit (or even non-profit) directing here in L.A.?  Do I need an agent?  Any and all help appreciated.

Answer
Hi Ellen,I think a two pronged approach would work well.  First contact all the community theatres you can and offer your services as a guest director for their theatres expressing and that you'd willing ness to work for their prevailing rate even if it is nothing.  Second take directing classes at places such as the nationhood playhouse and make contacts at those places who can help you move along in your career.  And of course there is always starting one's own company and producing and directing that way. Write me at kencosp@aol.com and lets talk directing and how to become a director. God bless. Doc
