QuestionHi Doc,
I am 21 years old and have been acting for 16 years. I have done lots of theater in Chicago and some student films. I went to a performing arts High school in Los Angels and have wanted to be a film and television actress since the age of 2. I have had classes and training and paid theater work. I am looking for an agent in Los Angeles that would not only except someone with intermediate experience but also help me get to the next level in my career. Please give me some advice.
Thanks,
nica
AnswerHello Nica, With all the experience and training you have had, you'd think that somewhere along the line someone would have taught you how to move into professional acting. But that is usually not the case because schools and teachers and directors are not usually interested in the individual moving ahead so much as they are interested in what the individual can do for them. So generally, we are faced with this: Giving you the background and knowledge needed to pursue acting professionally. Agents do not do that. Agents are interested in making money from their talent. What you need is a mentor, and that is what I am. I am an advisor to those who want to become professional actors. The additional preparation you need is too complex to write out here, but is simple enough for you to do so you can be seeking professional work and an agent in a few weeks. Step one, of course, is having a source of income. Step two is learning more about how the business of acting works. Step three would be to apply what you learn to your situation.
