Hello Phil.  I am a current audio intern at MTV Networks in NYC.  I am finishing up my college years within the next 2 years with a major in Audio Engineering Technology and a minor in Cinema.  I am extremely interested in audio and more specifically interested in becoming a sound editor in film.  I want to eventually be the person working on extremely big budget feature films that ends up doing all of the audio placement editting.  From the dialogue to the background soundtrack placement.  I just got asked to be the A.D. for an indie film that is going to be shot in the West Hartford, CT area back near where I go to school.  I've accepted the job and have been researching what to do while I A.D.  Please provide me with as much detail as possible in terms of what I will be required to do as an A.D. in film.

Thank you so much,
Jason Lewis

Jason,

Thanks for writing. I need some more information. Will you be working as a First AD, or a 2nd AD?

Phil

Answer
Jason,

On page 200 of my book, GET A REEL JOB, you will find the following job description:

First Assistant Director - the director's right-hand; liaison between the Director and the UPM; keeps the production moving; supervises the Extras; maintains the call time; maintains order and discipline on the set; tells the Camera Operator to roll the film and the Sound Mixer to roll the sound; breaks down the script in terms of its elements (sets, props, stunts, etc.) in order to prepare for film scheduling; prepares the film schedule with input from the Director; determines the number of extras and bits needed for each scene and with the Director's and UPM's approval, hires them.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

PHil
