Question
Hello! I am a 15 year old girl, and I live in Tampa, Florida. I have been interested in modeling for some time now, and am not quite sure how to get started. I am also not sure if I fit the requirements, because I am only 5'2". I also have very nice hands/feet and thought maybe hand or foot modeling would be a good place to start. I'm not sure how to capture those features in pictures, however. Should I take a picture of just my hands/feet? Also, I was wondering if it is necessary to get any pictures professionally done at this time? If so, would TFP shoots work? How would I find out about them?
                      Thanks,

Answer
There are no height, size or age requirements for commercial print modeling, so you could do that, assuming you are photogenic.
I wouldn't recommend starting out as a parts model, as that is one of the most difficult types of modeling.  You may want to contact the agencies in your area and see if they will accept a couple of snapshots for consideration.  If they ask for a modeling composite card instead, then you will be expected to provide that to them.
It is my opinion that TFP shoots are best done by more experienced models, as they know what works best for them, what sells them, and what their reps/clients are looking for in an image.  But there are a few talented beginners who just seem to instinctively know how to work it, and are so comfortable in front of the camera and photogenic that every image turns out fantastic and useable.  Certainly if you fit into the latter category, and make sure you are safe and secure (bringing a chaperone on shoots when you don't know the photographer well is always a good idea) - TFP can be a great way to save money on hiring photographers.  You can use one of the regional websites like Florida-Models.com or   www.passinault.com/aurora.html for more info local to you.
Good luck to you,
~Kitty

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
