Question
Hi Kitty,
Can you give me some tips on getting into the field of fashion/commercial modeling?  I have been approached by an agent to represent me.  His fees are 20% of my monies earned on the jobs as a model.  No additional fees are associated with this for me.  In addition, he provides me with the leads.  He is requiring I sign a contract with him for 1 year.  Is that pretty standard?

Any impute would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
The one year contract is pretty normal - the thing to ask is if the contract is exclusive, or non-exclusive.  If it is exclusive, and you are unable to seek work though any other agencies, then you need to feel that this particular agency is going to be able to provide work for you.  It is unusual for an agent to represent a model for both commercial modeling and fashion modeling - one usually does one or the other, and there are fashion agencies and commercial model/talent agencies.  One thing I suggest; make sure you know the reputation and business practices of the agency before you sign with them.  Check with the Better Business Bureau, ask other models who are signed with that agency, and check with the state to make sure they are licensed and in good standing.  If they check out, and you get rave reviews from other models - there's a good chance you'll do well in an exclusive contract.  If the contract is non-exclusive, and they do not require any fees, monies, classes, etc.--you have nothing to lose by signing with them.  Once you have representation, and they are sending you out--my best advice is to treat this as you would any other business or occupation.  Be on time, polite and professional.  Those qualities can set you apart from the masses, and can move a career along in the right direction.
Best of luck to you,
~Kitty

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
