Answer
If you are looking to get into fashion modeling, you only need a couple of snapshots.  You can then mail in copies with a cover letter to the agencies closest to you.  Alternatively, you can attend an agency open call, for which there is no charge for evaluation.

Ideally, a portfolio contains work that you have done as a model - and is used by experienced models to show tearsheets, etc. to potential clients.

Commercial print models generally do not use a portfolio, but rather a composite card. (Also called a zed card, or comp card.)  Your headshot is on the front with your name and agency, and the back has a number of photos with your stats.  Again, if you ask, there are a lot of commercial agencies that will consider a mailed in cover letter with a couple of photos.

In either case, you will need to check to see what the agency's criteria is for new faces, and if you fit that before sending in your information or attending an open call.  Fashion agencies have size, height and age requirements, while commercial agencies are less strict.

There are many books written on the different types of modeling, that also contain examples of good snapshots, comp cards and cover letters.  There are also modeling agency directories available in your local library, bookstore or online to help you find the right agency for you.

Good luck to you,
~Kitty

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
