Question
Hi Ms. Kavey,

I have a 2-year-old son and a wife who is eager to get him into modeling or acting.  I am aware of the many scams that prey on proud parents. I was hoping you could give us the names of legitimate talent/modeling agencies that would be willing to consider our son.  We live in the Los Angeles area.  I have read that legitmate agents will work strictly on commission, asking for no money up front.  Is this correct?

Answer
You can use one of the modeling agency directories, such as the Ross Reports (available on your local newsstand, or in your library or bookstore) or the SAG agency list online (www.sag.org, under Resources, Agent Information).  Those agents marked as full-service are those that have a modeling division in addition to representing actors, and the are generally quite reputable.  Many of the child modeling books also have agency lists in the back as well.  You'll still have to check to see if the agencies represent someone of your son's age.  You can also ask whether they prefer mailed in submissions, or if they have an open call.  Most of the agencies should accept snapshots for consideration, but as this is LA, you'll need to confirm that too.  No agency, modeling or talent, should ask you for money, require you to take classes, or require you to use a particular photographer, printing service, etc.  They might recommend someone, or give you a list of top choices - but you are correct, an agency should only earn money when you do.  You pay them a percentage of what you earn through them (usually 10-20%) to find you (or in this case your son) work.
Good luck to you,
~Kitty

Expertise

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
