Question
Hi Kitty,
I recently joined a modeling website where I can create my portfolio. I am looking for TFP work but have also gotten emails from photographers desiring to work with me. They have asked what my rates are like. How much would a reasonable rate be to charge? Thanks so much!

Answer
It really depends on what type of work they are asking you to do, what the expected return from it is, what kind of a release you sign, and what market you are in.
The best people to ask, are the agents in your area.  Make sure you have all the details of the job - whether you are doing commercial, fashion, glamour, etc., for how many hours (there are day rates and half-day rates as well as hourly), and if you're giving up all rights to the photos (in which case the photographer could sell and resell your image forever, and to anyone.) For yourself, you would also want to know if there's a makeup artist/hairstylist/photostylist included.  And personally, you could tailor your rates to reflect the value of what you are getting from an individual photographer.  If they are doing terrific work, and are well-connected with ad agencies, magazines, or other clients you might be interested in, you may want to give a lower figure than someone who is just breaking in to photography, has no published work/tearsheets, or isn't using professional services (makeup and/or hair).
Good luck to you,
~Kitty

Expertise

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
