Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/The big screen: dream or reality?

Question
Hey Phil,

I have been acting all my life, from when i was a tot, all the way through school, GCSE, A Level and even some extra work. When i came to the end of my time at college my drama teacher took me aside and we talked about me going to drama school here in the UK. It was a major decision that took many weeks to decide upon but i decided to head to univercity instead to secure my financial future. Well, here i am 2 1/2 years down the line and regretting every minute of it.

Acting is what i always wanted to do and i feel empty without it. I am wanting to get into acting as a career now, big screen preferaby. Lets face it, who doesnt dream of themselves being on the big screen?

My question is this: where would i start?

Open auditions? where would i find a list of these

Getting an agent? how would i get in touch and are they expensive?

Drama school? worth the investment?

I look forward to your reply?

Matt

Answer
Matt,

Thanks for writing. Unfortunately, I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help as I am unfamiliar with the film industry in the UK. Meaning, I don't know how actors in London or throughout the UK go about finding work.

I do know that Drama school will help you develop your talent and your craft immensely. Consider enrolling or if you cannot afford drama school, at least take acting classes with a local acting teacher.

I don't know where in the UK you would go to find open auditions or how to get an agent. Now, if you consider moving to Los Angeles to pursue your career, that's another story. If you do this, then I encourage you to read my book, GET A REEL JOB, as it will prepare you for moving to LA, finding a place to live, finding an agent, getting headshots done, and starting your career. You can find more about the book at my website at www.reeljob.net where you can order the book. You can also purchase it through Amazon.com. In addition, Gazelle Book Services in London distributes the book throughout Europe. You may check with them to find a local copy.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Please let me know if you have other questions that I may be able to help you with. And, if you do read my book and have any feedback for me, I'd be delighted to hear it.

Good luck!

Phil
