Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/being an extra...modeling

Question
I actually have two questions.  I live in the New York City area and have always wanted to act but am painfully shy so I figured why not try being an extra in a movie to get see how it feels to be in front of a camera.  How can I find work in the New York City area from reputible places?  My second question is I have also always wanted to do modeling but I am 30 and have a few small tattoos so I know those would be challenges in that field.  How could I go about finding work in the print modeling field?  I assume getting a portfolio together and approaching agencies...if that is correct can you recommend any photographers and agencies that would be interested in models that are not 13?  I appreciate any help and realize it says you are based in LA but I am hoping you could still help.

Answer
Kristin,

Thanks for writing. In order to work as an extra, you need to get your headshot and resume to a few Extras Casting companies. Contact the New York City Film Commission and ask them for a referral or two to some companies. Or check out their website as they may have companies listed.

As far as modeling, I've never worked in the modeling business, so I honestly can't advise you with that. My guess is that your tattoos, depending upon how noticeable, their location, and how large they are, MIGHT limit you, but not necessarily. And yes, in order to do print work, you need a portfolio that shows your work. I don't know any print work photographers in the NYC area. One thing you might consider is to buy a copy of Backstage, the industry trade paper. A lot of good photographers advertise in Backstage. Call a few and look at their work, see if any of them jump out at you. My book, GET A REEL JOB, has a section for actors about finding the right photographer. You may want to read that section and get some tips on finding the right photographer.

Good luck!
