Careers: Acting, Performing, Directing/headshots, among other things

Question
Hello, I'm a  16 year old entering my junior year in school. I've done shows, dance/voice lessons, concerts, everything because I just love it. I'd always planned on going to college for something that seemed "safe", like a psych major. But lately, a musical theater degree just seems so possible. I'm not as strong as others in performing, but it's my passion.
Anyways, I know it would probably make the most sense to get headshots done after I graduate from high school (timewise and everything), but I'm wondering where I could get these done. I live in upstate NY. What'd the average price for a session?

Answer
Hi, Rachel,
From what you tell me, I would say that you should not count on a career in musical theatre.  It is a very small field with very hard competition, and you note that you are not as strong as others in performing. It can be an excellent hobby, performing in community theatre.  I wouldn't waste money on headshots.  You would have to call professional photographers and ask them their prices.  A person with a good digital camera and skill on the computer in printing out photos could create a good head shot for you, if you know anyone like that.  Best wishes, Doc
