Question
Hey, I was wondering what modeling agencies look for. I've never had modeling experiance, but I'd love to try it out. I was looking for modeling agencies in the chicago area. I was wondering if the top modeling agencies only look for people with experiance. Would it be a joke for someone with no experiance to go to a open-call? It's somthing I'm really interested in, and I'm 17- I figured if i want to get into it, i should start now.

Answer
Different types of modeling agencies look for different things.  Generally speaking, clear skin and good teeth are universal.  Confidence and being photogenic is necessary.  Fashion modeling agencies need their models to be able to fit the clothing well - long and lean, without scars or marks on the body.  There is a minimum height requirement, usually 5'8 or 5'9 for women, 6' for men.  Women should be able to wear a size six sample, men a 40 suit.  Of course to find a new face that fits all an agency's criteria, plus is professional, on time and reliable would be preferred.
Experience is not something that is necessary for a model.  Many agents prefer a new face to have no experience at all, as sometimes a model will attend a modeling school or learn other bad habits about how to pose, or what expression they think they should have in a photo.
Nearly everyone will agree that they want to find the next new face - and the next new face is not someone who has any experience at all, so don't let that discourage you.  You can call the agencies you are planning to go to, confirm that you meet their criteria for new faces, and go in on an open call.
Good luck to you,

I can answer questions from those looking to get into the fashion or commercial modeling industry. Specifically, the requirements, what is needed, how to find an agent, what they look for, how to avoid scams, the difference between what a commercial model does, and a fashion model, would travel/relocation be required, what is on a comp card and in your portfolio.

Experience

Both my acting and modeling resume/portfolio is available online on my website. I am a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and also have available my actor's demo reel and voice-over demo online. I founded both the Florida-Models.com and Florida-Actors.com websites, which provide free modeling and acting info to the public. I have moved into directing, producing and screenwriting - and have won awards for my writing. I have worked in the industry as both a model and actress in Florida, New York City and Los Angeles until October 2007. I now reside in Europe.
