Question
Hello,
I am putting together a photographic folio for my jewellery making, and was wondering if you have any advice or tricks to try. My digital camera does really good macro and super macro shots and has plenty of adjustable features. My jewellery is mostly high level beading, but I am learning metal smithing.

Hello Debbie,
You will want to create a nice set-up to photograph your jewelry. Set up a desk or flat surface and cover it with a nice fabric or material to act as a backdrop to your jewelry pieces. Consider the color of your pieces when you choose the backdrop. You want to keep the background fairly neutral but one that also compliments the colors of your pieces.
Make sure you have ample lighting. Even if all you have are desk lamps, arrange them so they light your pieces well, and if at all possible, try to incorporate some natural lighting (either by working outside or near a window).
You will want to experiment a bit with how you lay your pieces for each shot, but you can look at catalogs and online stores to give you ideas of how a product shot should look like. Lastly, take lots and lots of pictures, both full shot, and good detail shots. That way, you have quite a bit to choose from when picking out your best pictures.

I also have strong, advanced knowledge of Photoshop, Powerpoint and Publisher; and beginner to immediate level knowledge in Illustrator, Freehand, After Effects, and Flash. In addition, I can cover miscellaneous subjects such as portfolio preparation, applying to art schools, art school study skills, color theory, basic design and drawing principles, basic animation techniques, working on personal art styles and exploring new artistic techniques. Topics such as the detailed legal aspects of art, web programming and Flash action scripting do not fall under my area of expertise.

I graduated summa cum laude with a double BFA in Illustration and Computer Art
(specializing in 2-dimensional animation) from the Savannah College of Art and
Design, where as a student, I happily tutored fellow peers in all aspects of art
and created numerous illustrations for the school newspaper. For the past
several years, I have been illustrating seminar books, designing numerous
graphics, and creating short animation sequences for use in video. In addition,
I work as a private tutor and am co-director / co-owner of a company that
focuses on and promotes the local music industry. I assist with all the
day-to-day operations of this company as well as manage all art direction and
