Careers: Arts/Approaching galleries
Expert: DJ Murphy - 4/21/2009
QuestionEven when I started at an old age, art has been my secret passion. My background does not have anything to be with art, so I have teaching myself the art of sculpting (I have much more books than art pieces) I would like to start contacting galleries that could be interested in my style and in my pieces. I have done some homework and I have chosen some galleries in Florida and other states that are suitable with my work, but many of them are far away form my city and I do not know what would be the best way to approach them. Any recommendation? Should I send a CD with my work along with a letter? What do you think? By the way, I think it would not hurt to show you my work for your examination; would you mind visiting my website at www.alfredoalamo.com? Thank you so much

AnswerHello Mr. Alamo,
First I did look at your website....and I like your work. It is unique....and depending on how you price it, the work should be marketable.
The least expensive way to approach galleries is to send emails to them....see if you can pick up a "Gallery Guide" for your area and get their email addresses. I would first test the water....send an email with link to your website then do a phone follow up. Second, you could do a CD of your works...send with a short cover letter...say you will be in the gallery's area, and could you come in for a brief presentation.
See these websites:

Also check Art Calendar Magazine...as they have a list of galleries who are looking for exhibitors. Here is their website:

Best of luck in your search...and your new career.
