Question
Dear Mr. Murphy, My aunt passed away recently and I was given one of her paintings. It is signed by the Russian artist Yuri Gorbachev. It is huge. Maybe 4' by 5' It is in perfect condition. It has red and purple horses with a winter background with Russian style buildings also in the background. Could this be an expensive and famous painting? I tried looking on the internet, eBay etc. and I saw comparable paintings ranging from $13,000 to $100,000. Do you have a ballpark figure as to it's worth you could give me? Thank you for your time sir.

Answer
Hello..........

Without seeing the painting, it is hard for me to tell you what it is worth....but saw a similar
painting on this website

http://www.russianstore.com/Yuri_Gorbachev/index.htm

I would guesstimate it's worth in the mid twenties to mid thirties.....but again, it's worth could vary by market.  There are auction houses that you might contact [Christie, Sotheby, or William Doyle Gallery in New York], and they might be able to give you a better figure....and maybe even sell it for you.

Good luck,

dj murphy
