Question
Hello DJ,
I have two paintings on wood panel to ship to Northern Ireland--fairly heavy, about 30 pounds. I have done quite a bit of research on how to do this, but am still confused and have questions. Do you have expertise in the area of shipping paintings overseas?

Specifically, I am wondering what I need to know about duty and taxes, and what issues arrive when sending by ocean freight vs. by air. I assume I'd need a wood crate if shipping by boat, and could use cardboard (well-packed) by air. Does this sound right?  Any tips appreciated!
thanks,
Rebecca Crowell

Answer
Actually I have only shipped art from the U.S. to Canada....and from Europe to the U.S.

I have used the U.S.P.S. [which if you take the dimensions to them they'll let you know if the piece fits their guidelines].

Wood will add considerable weight....but you might consider luan..which is a very thin plywood....and/or a cardboard which protects the paintings.  Make sure you wrap with plastic [buy one mill at hardware store] and wrap tightly so no moisture gets in package.

Hope this helps.
