Question
Hello,
I am currently a senior BFA student with an emphasis in painting and trying to make a major decision on my next step in my art career.  Most people in my major are applying for MFA programs, but not thinking about the harsh competition for College professor jobs when they graduate.  I am now looking into programs in Arts Administration and possibly the idea of starting a gallery of my own.  I am mainly interested in your advise on what helped you the most  to get to where you are now?  Is it most important to go to the best school you can to market yourself? Is it more important to have experience in the field and good portfolio and resume? And, also do you still feel a balance in your life with being and artist and also a business owner?

Thank you
Heather

Answer
Not sure if my path is the best for you.....I had a communications major undergraduate and an MBA later.....then went to the NEW SCHOOL
much later in life to become a gallery owner....there were course taught on gallery management.

I suggest you [if you have a choice] to go thru the MFA program,,,,perhaps with some classes in arts admin......see if you can get a part time job in an art gallery [depending where you live].

Wish I could tell you a definite path to follow...,but if you are of college age....your interests will definitely change over the next ten years...but stick with your artist talents.
