Subject: Composition in Colour?

Question
QUESTION: Hi Gianina!:)
It's me,again. The exam's getting closer so my mom's putting more pressure on me,so I just need to know something 'bout composition in colour 'cause that's one of my papers.Exactly what do they mean by composition in colour?I'm supposed to get a list of topics and I have to choose one and express what I feel concerning that topic but that part's confusing me.Help?

ANSWER: Hello again, Jayne!
I apologize for the slight delay in my response. I was returning from out of town. Now, letting you know exactly what "composition in color" means just by hearing the title is difficult. If I'm understanding you correctly, is this just one topic from a list of topics provided by your instructor? Are there any other guidelines accompanying this topic list? Has your instructor offered any guidance as to his/her expectations?

Judging just from the title, I would assume the topic relates to how composition of a piece of art is directly related to color and how artists can use color to affect visual balance and the way a viewer's eyes moves across a painting or drawing.

If you have more information or more specific questions about how composition relates to color, I will be happy to explain further.

Good luck as always! :)

QUESTION: That's ok!But I was getting a bit worried when you hadn't replied after 3 days :)
Thanks!Do you think you could help me with composing a picture, like placement and stuff?
Because when I try,it's like I have the image in my mind, but I can't make it appear on the paper. But I see the finished product in my mind, though.
:)Thanks so much for helping me out!

ANSWER: Just let me know specifically how I can help you (For example: Is it with brainstorming? critiquing the painting? etc.) and I will do my absolute best to assist.

QUESTION: Well,I see it in my mind. But I can't draw it out the way I want it on the paper. How do I draw it out the way I want it?
Sorry I'm so vague, but that's really my main problem...

Answer
No, it's not that vague; I understand. Have you been taught to use "thumbnails" to plan a painting? Thumbnails are tiny drawings (they can be as little as 2" x 3") that you do to visually brainstorm and map out your picture. You will want to do the thumbnail in the same proportion as what your final piece will be. For example, if you will have a square painting, make sure your thumbnails are square, no matter how small they are. Use these small, quick drawings to try to map out what you have in your head.

Once you've mapped it out roughly, look for references that you may need to use. For instance, if a sneaker was part of your painting, you would want pictures of sneakers or actual sneakers to use as your painting reference.

Last, you'll map out at full size, using your thumbnails and photo/object references to set your final piece.

Does this help? Let me know if you have further questions!
:)
