Question
Hi

A friend of mine and I have been working on a comic book/graphic novel project for about 2 years now. I am the artist and co-writer, but have been putting off really experimenting for awhile because I have been afraid to get stuck in an art style I don't like. Now, however, I am close to knowing what I want to do. It has been many a year since I've painted, but I really like the somewhat unfinished look of watercolors and the movement of paints that you do not find in digital media. I was wondering, what mediums would be best for digital reprinting, as in the form of a comic book? I would like to experiment and combine different paints, like gouche and watercolors and acrylic, as well as inks and some collaging. Thank you in advance!

Alyssa

Answer
Dear Alyssa,

As an artist who loves to experiment herself, I commend you on wanting to do so! Every media honestly offers different results when it comes to digital printing, and I can't say that one is necessarily “better” than another; they're just different. However, gouache and acrylic respond really well because their colors are very strong, though watercolors provide such a beautiful soft effect. Personally, I love using different acrylic mediums, such as Slow-Dri or matte medium, to give the paint different characteristics and workability. I do suggest that you be careful with your uses of any metallic colors and fluorescents, because those don't transfer as well with the printing process, unless you're using a special spot metallic color. The best advice that I can offer is to go forth and experiment away! It's a fun though sometimes frustrating activity, but it can yield the most surprising results when you least expect it to. If you're not already familiar, I would also suggest looking up Dave McKean's work (http://www.mckean-art.co.uk/). A friend turned me onto his artwork through a sequential style children's book titled “The Wolves in the Walls”, and he might be a perfect study for what you'll be doing.

Hope this helps and good luck!
Sincerely,
Gianina

Expertise

I can answer questions concerning most traditional mediums such as acrylics, watercolor, colored pencils, collage/cut paper, graphite, charcoal, and pen and ink. I also have strong, advanced knowledge of Photoshop, Powerpoint and Publisher; and beginner to immediate level knowledge in Illustrator, Freehand, After Effects, and Flash. In addition, I can cover miscellaneous subjects such as portfolio preparation, applying to art schools, art school study skills, color theory, basic design and drawing principles, basic animation techniques, working on personal art styles and exploring new artistic techniques. Topics such as the detailed legal aspects of art, web programming and Flash action scripting do not fall under my area of expertise.
