Question
Hi dj,

I am a "closet" artist, only doing acrylics and watercolours for my home and as gifts.  I get compliments all the time on my simple style.

My question is this:  a new art gallery just opened in my town, and they are looking for local artists.  I do not have a portfolio, but I could take digital pictures of the pieces I have at home.

Could I take the plunge and see if they like me?  Or not even bother, since I am not established.

Unsure in Kamloops,

Leta

Answer
Hello Leta,

Definitely take the plunge.  What can they say but "no thanks".  My guess is that they might be overwhelmed at first with artists...but remember they are new too...and have an interest in getting established.  If you believe your works merit comment......then by all means, do take and print out digital photo's.  You can put together a nice portfolio, without much expense.  Just get some plastic insert sheets...put your photo's in them.....buy a plain but attractive folder.....do an "artist statement"..and perhaps a short bio [tell a bit about yourself...with your contact info.......as in how to get ahold of you]...and make an appointment.

Remember.......every journey of a thousand miles, begins with a single step.......

Good luck,
