QuestionI am hoping to gain an apprenticeship at a tattoo studio, but at the moment I have no portfolio. I understand that tattoos are not your field, but I would greatly appreciate anything you can tell me about creating a generic portfolio. I basically need to know everything about putting one together. What is the average size of a portfolio? Should I include the original art or photograph it (of course depending on medium and size)? Should all pieces be in the same medium and run along a theme or style (this I am not sure about, as tattooists need to be able to draw in various styles)? How many pieces should I include? Do I need to label them with anything if I'm not trying to sell them? How should the portfolio look? Leather bound? As you can see, I have many questions. If you are able to point me in the direction of a step-by-step guide online, feel free to do so. Thanks.
AnswerHello.........the simpler the better as far as portfolio's are concerned.
Buy some plastic 8 1/2 x 11" sheets that you can put your art work inside. Use photographs of the works. Begin portfolio by putting in the vital info.....who you are, where you can be contacted....what you are looking to do....something about your background....etc. Do it with the same thought that you would use, if you were reviewing portfolio's of artists that you want to hire. What would you like to know about the artist?
You are right I know nothing about tatoo artists...but would suggest you speak with at least two or three of them, after you have decided what to include in your portfolio.....see if they agree with what you have done.
Good luck!
